Found Poem

We have to learn things the hard way sometimes,
life gives us options, or in this case guavas.
We see a firm and bumpy guava and imagine how it would have such exotic flavors and textures,
but you wouldn't know if it is quite ripe yet til of course you try it.
So, you do,
you bite into the not quite ripe guava and feel its strange texture,
in your head it taste like if it were sour yet bland,
your mouth forms somewhat of a cringe.
That is when you learn,
you see a different guava, and you imagine that it would taste exactly the same,
You think about walking away from it but you don't,
you want to make the guava worth your calories.

750 word essay on theme

        Although both of these essays were written by two different authors, they both had the same concept in mind. The first story which is An American Story, was written by Anthony Lewis, a journalist for The New York Times. The second story, which is, Hunger of Memory was written by Richard Rodriguez. Both, An American Story, and Hunger of Memory, have the topic which is based on the struggles that immigrants have to face in order for immigrants to be able to come to America.

         In the first story, Anthony Lewis describes his experience from discussing with, and hearing an immigrant's story. Lewis shares a story of a Vietnamese boy that arrived as a refugee, his name is Viet Dinh. Viet traveled with his mother, four sisters and one of his brothers. The way Lewis tells about Viet's story is in a very compassionate way. "There is no country that has taken so many people from so many places and cultures, and gained so much in the process."(Lewis, p.125). Lewis writes about how he got the first letter from Viet, and how he still receives letters now, keeping Lewis updated on how Viet is continuing to make so much progress, since he arrived from Vietnam. In one of Viet's most recent letters, he mentioned that he had already graduated from Harvard. "I graduated from the Harvard Law in June and am now a law clerk for Judge Lawrence H. Silberman of the U.S Court of Appeals in Washington. Next year I clerk for Justice Sandra Day O'Connor at the Supreme Court."(Lewis,p.155). It is inspiring to hear that a person that had to face so many obstacles got so far and is continuing to succeed.

         As for the second story, Hunger of Memory, Richard Rodriguez is talking about how he personally had to face immigration; he based this story off of his life story.

As a boy he saw he’d always see his parents finding difficulties when speaking English because it was a foreign language to them. For Rodriguez living a life with immigrant parents was kind of tough because he wished that his parents would sound like “los gringos”, or fluent when they had to speak the foreign language.

Descriptive essay

      Winter break might seem like one of the most fun times of the year, with all those holidays in between, here in la there is lots to do.LA is a city that is quite festive during the holidays. Although there may not be the "white winters", it does get quite cold here. But anyways my winter break was memorable, I do have to admit.
       On the last day of school I stormed out of my last class, and had a 30 minute drive back home, when we finally got there I was glad I did not have any school the next Monday. As Christmas came closer and closer,I realized that we still hadn't gone christmas shopping, of course we were so last minute.So we headed out to the mall, and it was terribly crowded. Being the claustrophobic person I am, I hated it, but there was nothing I could possibly do,so I spent the rest of the day freaking out aside from shopping for gifts. 

        On Christmas eve I visited all my relatives up in Palm Springs, I was excited to see them. We waited several hours for the clock to strike twelve. Once it was time we all started hugging one another, saying "merry Christmas". The party continued after all the hugs were given and a few hours later it was already 4 o'clock in the morning so my parents drove to one of my relatives' house, since we were planning to stay over. On Christmas day we went up to the mountains to go to the snow. Being the Californian I am, I could not stand those type of temperatures. I was so cold but somehow I managed to last a few hours. But it was fun,and I awfully sad to go back to my aunts house because the snow was so pretty to look at.

           As soon as christmas was over we drove back home,and new years was right around the corner. the year seemed to go by so quickly, I was surprised that we were already starting a new year in such short notice. My family and I spent that day at home just watching movies til about 4 in the morning. After that the days went by so quick, I was happy to go back to school. On the night before school I did my best to sleep early to get a good night's rest to wake up not so tired, and that was the end of my winter break.

John F Kennedy Essay

    On November 22,1963 John F Kennedy was assassinated by a man who hid behind a window in the Texas School Book depository. A man was later arrested because witnesses had pointed him out, his name was Lee Harvey Oswald (Randall, biography, 582). Many people believe this event had happened because of some sort of conspiracy. But no one can really prove why it had to happen.
    John F Kennedy seemed to be one of the only one of the few presidents that actually tried to help his country. That day had to one of the saddest days in history. Many people were in tears when they had announced the president's death. Only someone who honestly had no sense would rebel against the president's decision. Lee Oswald wanted to be noticed, so he went and took extreme measures. So many people were devistated by the event. "That morning's Dallas News had carried a full-page advertisement critisized Kennedy for his abandonment of the constitution and softness toward Moscow and communism." (Randall,Biography, 580) I can only imagine how life would be if kennedy had survived to this day.
      Kennedy only wanted what was best for his country, that was his promise to America. He had made a program called 'the new frontier', it emphasized on finding solutions to many problems. One of the most important parts of his achievements was to make sure racial segregation had disappeared, he wanted everyone to have equal rights. Although he was only presideent for little over a thousand days he changed alot.

District Assessment

We now live in the 21st Century, the majority of people use technology in their everyday lives. Technology has a negative and positive side to it.if used correctly then it will help many people. adults usually think,"..that children are wasting time online, texting, or playing video games." But research has been made by authors to go against that statement.
      The authors believe that advanced technology is the only intended to be used as a type of thing you may use to get research or connect with people at times. They have made new programs that will help the youth learn more. "The digital world is creating new opportunities for youth to grapple with social norms,explore interests, develop technical skills, and experiment with new forms of self-expression". The authors are trying to show 'us' the readers that technology is not a terfible"waste of time".I can honestly say that most teens mis-use the new technology but a small percentageactually uses it to help and gain newer information."A smaller number of youth also use the online world to explore interests and find information that goes beyond what they have access to at school or in their local community." New site creators have made their programs advanced in a positive way.Not only have they made it more useful to the youth and they are able to learn things more independently.
   The authors have made it pretty clear that they believe the new media is a good thing and is very influencial. Companies are still trying to change the minds of the people that dont exactly like technology. They have a lot to back up their statements on how its a great thing. I still dont quite know where I stand on technology so I guess I'm neutral.
    In conclusion,after spending some time,three years to be exact; the authors just want to focus on the positive aspect there is to technology instead of focusing on the negative side. Companies only wish to advance and do greater, and better things in the future. In my opinion technology has it's ups and downs but it is also has helped a lot, we should all learn to live with the new media.

Autobiography

 Yeah I know Lissette isn't normally spelled with a double S or a double T, but let's face it my first name isn't spelled "correctly" either. I grew up living in Los Angeles and have lived here just about my whole life. My life has always seemed pretty mellow. I've always been pretty quiet about everything. One of my favorite quotes is "The best is yet to come" ,which was quoted from Frank Sinatra.
      I'm not the best when it comes to describing myself but I'll try my best. I'm not exactly quiet although i usually never talk; i honestly choose not to talk. I love writing poetry; one of my favorite poets is Edgar Allen Poe or as known as "The master of terror". I especially love slam poetry, it's just inspirational to me. My favorite academic subject have got to be math and science. I was a part of the academic pentathalon for a while in middle school but I didn't feel comfortable so i decided to quit. I attended Pio Pico Elementary/Middle school, a few years ago it was converted into an all middle school. At the time, I was in the fourth grade so for fifth grade I went to Virginia Road Elementary which was right near my home. For middle school i went to John Burroughs Middle School.
      i usually never get bored because as the saying goes, "only boring people get bored". I just think that if you are currently still breathing then you should live your life as amazing and crazy as possible. I love rock music and old school rap, I vary in genres for music, that's basically how you sum it all up. My favorite colors are orange and olive green. I have a great amount of hatred towards the color pink, I don't even know why. I use to like playing softball but i still love football, I'm a huge football fanatic. I use to be a Cowboys fan but my team now is the San Diego Chargers. When I graduate high school i plan to go to a good university to study in the medical field to soon after be a pediatrician. When i was younger I always wanted to work for the FBI more specifically, be a coraner. I thought about joining the army for a while but then i realized it's not worth it. I would love to volunteer all the time, I like helping people because who doesn't, other than cold-hearted people.
     I hope freshman years goes good, even though it started out pretty rough since i transferred schools; I still miss my old school, even though nearly every teacher says it's a bad school. I can honestly say it wasn't a bad school, it just has bad history. So far I don' exactly love Fairfax High School, but it's okay because I might get used to it after a while. I hopr to get my grades on check and make the best of it.
